When a mesmer slaps mind wrack on you, are you going to swap up or down?

I usually swap up to a high energy set using a staff on my ranger so that mind wrack doesn't give me extra damage. Then I can still use some evade stances and self healing.

But if you swap down into negative energy then e-denial can't hit you?

And if I make a pvp only ranger where can I find a zero energy swap down thing.

Or is this purely a pve char going into pvp with swapping items.

You would rather take the damage from Mind Wrack than to expose your energy and take damage from Energy Surge/Energy Burn and also be without energy and again be suceptible to Mind Wrack. Hide your energy except when you need it cast spells.

By the way, why are you worrying about energy denial as a ranger, mesmers will likely move to a caster anyways? If they target you, you just happen to be close and they are just using you to bring a monk closer.

Also, you can bring PvE weapons to your PvP characters using your storage so PvP characters can also swap weapons. But like I said before, as a ranger I wouldn't worry about weapon switching for energy.

You are going to want to swap to have less energy so that they opposing mesmer cannot drain it. Then when you really need to heal (or cast a spell/skill in your case), you can swap back to your normal weapon set, get the heals off, and then swap back so you always have enough energy in your reserves to cast emergency spells. The mind wrack damage is really negligible because having them drain 20 or 30 energy when it is out in the open is much more destructive.

Energy denial works quite well against resolve trappers and crippling shot rangers (the usage of crippling shot goes way down when you get energy denied). Also, it helps for bow rangers to have a -5 energy bow to end malaise even earlier.

Energy denial works great against any class. No class wants to just stand there and wand, but I would have questioned the motives of the mesmer who is draining the ranger, not the ranger himself. The ranger is hurt by the edenial no doubt, so he is right to worry about it (maybe not to the extent he is, but it's better to be prepared), but that mesmer is really the one who needs to reexamine his target draining priority.
